Betel nut, derived from the Areca palm (Areca catechu), holds significant cultural and social importance, particularly in Asia. Its use dates back thousands of years, often associated withrituals, social gatherings, and traditional medicine. The nut is chewed with betel leaves and lime, creating a stimulant effect and a unique flavor. The country with the highest betel nut
consumption is India a major consumer, where it is consumed with or without tobacco (Garg,Chaturvedi and Gupta 2021). In the countryside of India 34.7% of males compared to 32.4% of females consume betel nuts (Garg, Chaturvedi and Gupta 2021). In the urban areas of India consumption rates among males is about 37.8% and in females is about 29.7% (Garg, Chaturvedi and Gupta 2021). Betel nut is harvested from the Areca palm, which typically grows in tropical regions. The harvesting season varies by region, but it generally occurs twice a year, with the main season being from June to September. Farmers usually hand-pick the ripe nuts when they are mature and ready (Sharan, Mehrotra, Choudhury and Asotra 2012). The Areca fruits may be sun dried for several weeks, once dried; it is cut into small pieces to make it easier to chew (Sharan, Mehrotra, Choudhury and Asotra 2012).

Betelnut and Culture shares an old bond

Betel nuts have a significant cultural and social importance in many Asian countries. Betel nuts are often used for social interactions and strengthening relationships (Murphy and Herzog 2015). While people consume betel nuts primarily for their stimulant properties. In many cultures, chewing betel nuts is a traditional practice that has been passed down through generations (Murphy and Herzog 2015). The combination of betel nuts with slaked lime and various flavorings enhances the experience, often making it a common activity that promotes bonding and social interactions (Murphy and Herzog 2015). While some enjoy the rush and stimulating effects, others appreciate the taste and the tradition itself, making it an essential part of their social life.​

Chewing betel nuts is considered a significant part of culture and is a taught behaviour that is ingrained in the culture. Chewing is seen as a positive social behaviour (Murphy and Herzog 2015). As stated, 43% of participants said betel nuts play a crucial role in rosaries and other ceremonies. It's cultural, particularly during rosaries and anniversaries (of death), they pass it out, It is tradition and cultural for them to distribute the betel nut (Murphy and Herzog 2015).Chewing betel nut was considered socially significant in addition to being an essential cultural practice Murphy and Herzog 2015).

Knowing that there has been an old bond between betel nut and culture in various corners of the world, it is now a part of tradition and practices for a large community irrespective of consequences. It is alright till its used for the cultural purpose without consuming it, but chewing it on daily basis has now been practiced  in various forms at various places that could be very harmful.
