Betel nut is harvested from the Areca palm, which typically grows in tropical regions. The harvesting season varies by region, but it generally occurs twice a year, with the main season being from June to September. Farmers usually hand-pick the ripe nuts when they are mature and ready (Sharan, Mehrotra, Choudhury and Asotra 2012). The Areca fruits may be sun dried for several weeks, once dried; it is cut into small pieces to make it easier to chew (Sharan, Mehrotra, Choudhury and Asotra 2012).
