Role of Dental Hygienist

The oral damage cannot be undone, but it can definitely be treated and healed, and that is where dental hygienist plays a significant role.

ORAL CANCER SCREENING

  • Conduct regular oral examinations to identify early signs of oral cancer (ODHA n.a).

  • Assess lesions or abnormalities in the oral cavity associated with betelnut use(ODHA n.a).

  • Educate patients on the increased risk of oral cancer linked to betelnut consumption (ODHA n.a).

  • Document findings and refer patients to specialists when necessary for further evaluation(ODHA n.a).

HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES

Suggest alternatives to betelnut, such as:

  • Sugar-free gum or mints for oral stimulation (CDA 2024).

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables that promote oral health (CDA 2024).

  • Herbal teas or natural mouth rinses that do not contain harmful additives (CDA 2024).

  • Educate patients on the benefits of a balanced diet for overall health and oral hygiene (CDA 2024).

  • Promote regular physical activity as a healthy lifestyle choice that can reduce the urge to use betelnut (CDA 2024).

  • These points align with the regulations and guidelines for dental hygienists in Canada, emphasizing the importance of patient education and health promotion.

SOME PREVENTION STRATEGIES FOR BETELNUT CONSUMPTION

Some prevention strategies for betel nut use includes:

Public Awareness Campaigns, Regulation and Legislation, Support for Cessation Programs, Community Engagement, Research and Collaboration with Health Professionals.

Public awareness campaigns are very important as we should focus on educating the community about the health risks linked to betel nut consumption through social media, and community programs (Miller and Rollnick 2019).

Regulation and legislation is another important aspect for the public to urge the government to create laws that regulate the sale and distribution of betel nuts, particularly to minors (Miller and Rollnick 2019).

Support for cessation programs is another key as the government should offer resources and support for those looking to quit using betel nuts, which could include counseling services (Miller and Rollnick 2019).

Community engagement we need to actively involve local communities in prevention initiatives by promoting alternatives that are culturally appropriate (Miller and Rollnick 2019).

Ongoing study is required to monitor the health impacts of betel nut usage, assess the efficacy of preventative efforts, and conduct evaluations (Miller and Rollnick 2019).

Collaboration with health professionals is critical to ensuring that healthcare personnel receive mandated training to identify and address betel nut usage among patients, giving them the tools they need to provide appropriate guidance and support. (Miller and Rollnick 2019)

COUNSELING APPROACHES FOR ADDRESSING BETELNUT USE

Counseling approaches for addressing betel nut use include Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive behavioral therapy, Behavioral interventions, Psychoeducation, Support groups, Relapse prevention and cultural Sensitivity.

Motivational Interviewing means the use of a client-focused method to boost motivation for change by highlighting personal reasons for wanting to quit and ensuring the individual is willing and is consenting (WHO 2018).

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a proactive approach that helps individuals recognize and change negative thoughts and behaviors linked to betel nut use. It promotes healthier ways to cope by implementing strategies such as educating children in school about the cons of betel nut (WHO 2018).

Behavioral interventions involve creating tailored plans to reduce or stop betel nut consumption. This includes setting realistic goals, which are crucial for helping individuals understand the process of change (WHO 2018).

In psychoeducation, we need to share information about the health risks of betel nut use, such as oral health problems and the potential for addiction, to empower clients with the essential knowledge to help them quit (WHO 2018).

Support groups help to encourage or facilitate involvement in support groups where individuals can exchange experiences and strategies for overcoming betel nut use in a nurturing setting and can understand harms by listening to each other (WHO 2018).

Relapse prevention strategies help to teach clients methods to handle cravings and challenging situations, helping them create a solid plan to stay abstinent (WHO 2018).

Cultural sensitivity is an approach to counseling that is aware of the cultural importance of betel nuts in specific communities and incorporates cultural values into the counseling process (WHO 2018).
